Type 2 Diabetes - Global Rates Rising
Rates of diabetes are rising all over the world as more and more people everywhere fall victim to the serious health consequences of carrying too much weight.
Nearly 9 out of 10 people with newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes are overweight. Did you know that if you are overweight, losing just five to ten percent of your body weight could help you better manage your diabetes?
The World Health Organization estimates indicate that worldwide cases of Type II diabetes will more than double in the next two decades, from 140 million today, to 300 million.
And the U.S. isn’t the only country with a big share of the problem. With the current rate of increase, researchers say the United States will have about 29 million diagnosed diabetics by the year 2025. But India is expected to have about twice that number – with 60 million diabetics needing all the costly medical care demanded by this painful and disabling disease.
And with type 2 diabetes almost entirely avoidable through proper diet and healthy lifestyle, there can be few better examples today of how an ounce of prevention beats a pound of cure.
You are probably tired of hearing your family doctor bug you about losing weight to prevent or manage type 2 diabetes. So, you got a diet plan from friend or better yet a book and you’re ready for action. The first few days were great. But then the really world catches up to you - - there are nights you didn’t have time to fix your food, your family wanted something different for dinner and by the weekend it was family pizza night. And what happened to your diet? It went out the door with the pizza box.
It is important when people are diagnosed with type 2 diabetes that they not fall victim to the trouble of knowing what to eat. All too often it is seen that people give up on their health because they do not know what foods to eat, and which to avoid. While there is no one diet that is appropriate for all diabetics, it is important that when diagnosed with diabetes one must have a reliable source to look to for diet support.
