Metabolic Syndrome X and Cognition
Metabolic Syndrome X also referred to as Syndrome X and Insulin Resistance is a very common disease which is often overlooked by many medical professional. Metabolic Syndrome X can lead to a whole array of dangerous physical problems, including cardiovascular illness, diabetes and heart disease. And apparently, it’s related to mental decline, as well.
People don’t often associate their weight with mental ability one way or the other. It’s understood as an emotional stressor, but as far as brain function, we don’t usually regard weight as a factor.
There’s new evidence that says we should. The Metabolic Syndrome X develops as a person becomes more and more overweight. It actually changes the way the body functions so that it’s easier to gain weight, and harder to lose it. But it’s also associated with higher levels of blood inflammation.
And inflammation of the vessels in the brain restricts blood flow. This could result in a large stroke, but it also can exert its effects over time, causing a decline in your thinking ability.
Genetics, in some cases, can be blamed in part for developing Metabolic Syndrome X but for most it is simply leading an unhealthy lifestyle that is the culprit. Eating processed foods, too much sugar, not exercising, smoking and stress are the leading causes of Syndrome X.
So what can you do?
The most important thing you can do is to exercise and eat right. If you currently have an exercise program keep it up, if not you should really consider starting one (of course if your doctor approves). You should also drink plenty of water and start eating better by skipping processed foods like starches, white bread, cookies, cakes, desserts & sugars. You should also limit your caffeine and alcohol intake.
To see if you are insulin resistant you can ask your doctor to test your sugar levels. Even if some people, especially the elderly, have given up on ever getting their body well again, they may be willing to take another stab at getting healthy, just to preserve their mind.
